Sold Out at the Royal Mint - the must-have coin of the year remains the UK Sovereign

The release each year of the United Kingdom Gold Proof Sovereign is widely anticipated throughout the collector world. This interest has intensified further still for the issue of the coin in 2021, which has been released to celebrate the landmark 95th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.

Despite this importance a mintage of just 7,995 coins was set for 2021, which has resulted in another Proof Sovereign sell out announcement before the beginning of the new year.

Annual sell-out

In the past six years the Proof Sovereign had also sold out – with the success of the 2021 coin confirming the fact that the annual Proof Sovereign remains the most anticipated and in-demand release of the year.

The good news is that Harrington and Byrne was able to secure some of the final coins available and can now offer you the chance to secure one of these highly sought-after 2021 United Kingdom 95th Birthday Proof Sovereigns.

A unique mintmark

For 2021 only, the Gold Proof Sovereign featured a special commemorative mintmark. Unique to the proof version of the coin, it remains a rarely seen addition to the proof sovereign.

The decision has rightly been taken by the Royal Mint to celebrate the landmark 95th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth II on the premier coin of the realm. This has been done with the addition of the mintmark that features a ‘95’ within a crown. In addition to that, a symbolic 95 mills have been added to the edge of the coin.

The one-year-only Royal Mint designed mintmark features on all proof sovereigns in 2021 – and sits alongside Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George & the Dragon on the reverse of the coin.

The importance of unique sovereigns

On the rare occasions when the sovereign sees a one-year design change like in 2021, demand from collectors always goes through the roof. This is because changes to the sovereign design remain infrequent and on the limited occasions when they do occur, the one-year-only design changes lead to rapid sell outs and consequently high secondary market price increases.

And this is exactly what has occurred with the 2021 UK Proof Sovereign. Issued with a worldwide mintage of 7,995 the coin was sold out before the end of December. This success follows hot on the heels of the sell-out achieved for the proof sovereign in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 AND 2020 – underlining the huge strength of the demand within the market for the very best proof sovereign issues and the fact that the UK Proof Sovereign is now without doubt the most successful annual collector release in the world.

Struck in 22 Carat Gold

Like all United Kingdom Sovereigns, the 2021 release has been struck in 22 Carat Gold by the Royal Mint. The proof version of the coin, featuring the unique one-year commemorative mintmark and edge detail, comes housed in the finest Royal Mint Official Presentation Case and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. The coin has also been struck to the same historical specifications as every United Kingdom Sovereign for the last 200 years.
