On the 1st September 1985, a Franco-American expedition led by Dr Robert Ballard and Jean-Louis Michel accomplished a feat no others had before – they finally discovered the wreck of the RMS Titanic. Hidden 12,500 feet deep underwater, the ship was found a staggering 73 years after tragically colliding with an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean on its maiden voyage in April 1912, claiming the lives of over 1,500 people.

In tribute to history’s most famous shipwreck, the £1, £2, and £5 coins all showcase a detailed image of the recognisable ocean liner, which at the time of its launch over 110 years ago was the largest and most luxurious ship in the world, weighing approximately 46,000 tonnes and carrying more than 2,200 crew and passengers. Each coin’s superb design captures the ‘unsinkable’ vessel’s immense scale, portrayed with its four distinctive funnels blowing smoke while the choppy waves crash beneath. On the three obverses is an official portrait of Charles III by another leading engraver, Jody Clark, creator of the UK’s fifth and final official coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
