Marking the 200th Anniversary of an iconic charity

2024 marks the 200th Anniversary of the founding of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in 1824. In the 200 years since, the RNLI has saved over 144,000 lives around the coastline of the British Isles.

To mark this key anniversary for this hugely important national charity, a brand-new silver coin has been released with limited numbers by the Royal Mint. The good news is that Harrington & Byrne was successful in securing a small number of pieces available and can offer you the opportunity today to add this key coin to your collection.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution

The RNLI exists today thanks to the vision of one man, Sir William Hillary. Living on the Isle of Man, Hillary had learnt first-hand the dangerous nature of the sea, witnessing dozens of shipwrecks and helping save many lives with other locals.

On 4 March 1824, he gathered more than 30 influential Londoners, a group that consisted of aristocrats, clerics, politicians, naval officers, brokers, bankers, merchants and philanthropists, at the City of London Tavern in Bishopsgate. They unanimously passed 12 resolutions that still stand as part of the RNLI’s charter today. These include treating the subjects of all nations equally, whether at peace or during war, and awarding medals for bravery to individuals who save lives.

During its 200 years, the RNLI has been responsible for saving over 144,000 lives around our coastline. Since 2021, the RNLI has been operating over 240 lifeguard patrols across the beaches of the United Kingdom and Channel Islands – funded by donations and operated by thousands of volunteers across the country.

200th anniversary release

To mark the 200th anniversary of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution the Royal Mint has issued a brand-new silver proof tribute in collaboration with the charity – the first time ever that the RNLI has been honoured on a United Kingdom coin.

Featuring the iconic design flag and logo of the RNLI, the coin has been designed by prolific coin artist John Bergdahl. To pique the interest of collectors further still, the coin features the rarely seen on a UK coin addition of colour, to complete the appearance of the coin design perfectly.

Just 4,000 of these coins have been released by the Royal Mint struck in 925/1000 Sterling Silver to a proof finish – housed in a specially designed acrylic block, perfect for displaying, along with a Certificate of Authenticity

Limited numbers available

The great news for Harrington & Byrne collectors is that we were able to secure a small number of these key coins from the Royal Mint to offer today, for what undoubtedly is one of the key commemorative releases for 2024 – but now have less than 200 of these now remaining meaning you will need to act extremely quickly to avoid disappointment.

The United Kingdom silver proof coin comes housed in an official Royal Mint Presentation with a Certificate of Authenticity. It truly is the perfect release to mark this key anniversary for the charity and for the nation it helps keep safe.
