Introducing a brand new United Kingdom coin

This year has seen the introduction of the brand new United Kingdom 12-sided £1 coin struck by the Royal Mint. Replacing in circulation the £1 piece that we have known since the coin was first introduced to the coinage of the nation in 1983, the appearance of this new coin is already now commonplace in our everyday change.

Because of this, it is already easy to forget that this is the most significant change to the coinage of the country for a generation – and a landmark occasion worthy of commemoration.  As a result, the Royal Mint has issued a range of commemorative issues to coincide with this event – many of which have long since sold out.

However, despite this fact, you can still secure one of these highly coveted commemorative coins for yourself…

Unique and fitting reverse design

The United Kingdom £1 coin has been struck annually since 1983, when the coin replaced the £1 banknote in circulation. Each year since has seen the coin struck – both as a commemorative and circulating issue – with the reverse design changing annually. The varying designs that featured would either be a representation of one of the four countries of the United Kingdom (such as heraldic designs and floral emblems) or the kingdom as a whole.

The first 12-sided £1-coin issue follows in the same vein. The design for the new £1 coin is the work of 15-year-old David Pearce and it combines traditional floral emblems that symbolise the modern United Kingdom in a fresh and elegant way.

Just 25,000 individual coins

And to mark the significant numismatic occasion of the release of the new 12-sided pound coin, the Royal Mint has rightly issued limited edition commemorative pieces. As I mentioned, these have proved exceptionally popular with collectors. Unsurprisingly the silver £1 coin has proved especially sought-after – and this follows on from the rapid sell out achieved last year for the last round silver pound coin.

Issued with a mintage of 25,000 2017 United Kingdom 12-sided Silver Proof Coins, the demand has been huge already. With such an important numismatic release, which has seen the biggest change to the appearance of our coinage for at least a generation, interest from collectors was always going to be high in the silver commemorative piece.

Official Presentation from the Royal Mint

This important commemorative coin – the very first of its kind – has been struck in 925/1000 Sterling Silver by the Royal Mint to an immaculate proof finish.
