The Original Victoria Silver Crown – the Coin that helped shape an Empire

19th Century Britain was dominated by the reign of Queen Victoria. She came to the throne as an 18-year-old in 1838 and would rule for the remainder of the century and beyond, until her death in 1901. In total, Victoria was on the throne for 63 and a half years.

And when we think of the Victorian Era we instantly conjure up thoughts of the expansion of the British Empire and the tremendous advancement in industry, technology and the arts. Names such as Dickens, Darwin and Livingstone come instantly to mind - iconic figures who were central to the progress of our nation and indeed the world.

Imagine for a second the coins that would have passed through the hands of these great personalities. Coins that were used for trade throughout the world and that helped finance this growing Empire, which would stretch to the four corners of the world by the end of Victoria’s reign.

Guaranteed at least 170 years old

Today I can offer you an opportunity to own the original crown coin of the reign – perhaps one of the most iconic of the era. Struck for the final time in 1847, the Queen Victoria Young Head Silver Crown was actually only ever struck for circulation in just 3 of the years of her entire 63-year reign.

This rarity is underlined by the total number of coins originally struck. Compared to the Jubilee Head Silver Crown, that was struck between 1887 and 1892, just a fraction of the Young Head issue were released – with the total mintage figure less than 10% of that of the later coin. When collectors therefore are searching out the chance to own an example of each of the Victoria Crowns, the original Young Head issues are ten times harder to find. It is an essential addition to any British coin collection as a result.

The premium silver coin of the realm

The Crown denomination is one of the most recognisable and historic of all British coins. With a history dating back to the reign of Henry VIII, the coin remains an important UK coin to this day in the form of the modern £5 coin. During the reign of Victoria it was no different. The Crown coin was the premium silver coin of the era – but despite this was struck in less than a third of her reign and in only 3 years was the original version of the coin minted. Indeed, less than 400,000 coins were ever struck.

Like all United Kingdom Crown coins from the reign, the Queen Victoria Young Head Crown was struck by the Royal Mint in 925/1000 Sterling Silver. Along with the youthful effigy of Queen Victoria designed by William Wyon, the coin also features a magnificent shield design.
