Details

90 years since the famous events of 1936!

The events that unfolded during 1936 changed the course of history forever and threatened the very heart of the monarchy itself. As the nation mourned thepassing of George V, his son and heir Edward VIII caused a constitutional crisis by giving up the crown, for the woman he loved, to his younger brother, Albert, history’s most reluctant king.

Three Kings featured on one coin

To mark exactly 90 years since the unprecedented events of 1936 which saw no less than three monarchs on the British throne in less than twelve months, an official new Gold Sovereign has been released to the nation. On the reverse are three Royal portraits, by professional coin and medal designer Arianna Cicconi, depicting a superb likeness of father and sons, each wearing crowns and official robes.

The never-before-seen design includes an effigy of George V, whose passing in January 1936 triggered the extraordinary series of events that year, his son Edward who abdicated after just eleven months to marry Wallis Simpson, and his younger brother George VI who neither desired nor expected to be king.

On the coin’s obverse is an official portrait of Charles III by engraver Jody Clark, who designed the UK’s final coinage portrait of his mother, Elizabeth II.
