A never-before-seen design

Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St George and the Dragon has featured on more British Sovereigns than any other design. More than 200 years since its first appearance, a ONE-YEAR-ONLY interpretation of the famous legend by John Bergdahl now appears on an official NEW Gold Quarter Sovereign for the first time ever, following its official approval at Buckingham Palace.

Solid 22-Carat Gold

Dating back to the 11th century, the story of St George and the Dragon is the ultimate tale of good triumphing over evil, and has today been superbly reimagined in 2026 on this limited edition 22-Carat Gold coin, the work of highly regarded artist John Bergdahl, who has, during his illustrious career, produced many important commissions for The Royal Mint; these include coins for the historic Platinum Jubilee and the 2023 Coronation. Bergdahl’s NEW portrayal depicts St George, strong and courageous, mounted on a rearing horse, dressed in Roman armour plus a plumed helmet and raising his sword high ready to slay the ferocious dragon on the ground beneath him.

Unique and sought-after finish

Significantly and adding further to demand, this magnificent design, which is set against a fully frosted background, has been selectively polished to a mirror-like shine due to its Enhanced Reverse Proof Finish, a unique and sophisticated minting technique designed to create depth, dimension and highlight the design’s finer details – an effect highly coveted by collectors due to its rarity and exclusivity. Meanwhile, on the obverse is an official effigy of Charles III, also accentuated by the coin’s unique finish. This effigy has been designed by another key name in numismatics, sculptor Jody Clark who is best known for creating the UK’s fifth official definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the last one of her extraordinary seventy year reign which first appeared in 2015.
