Canada’s official silver coin release for the 80th Anniversary of the End of World War Two

On the 8th May 1945 the total surrender of Germany was celebrated and over 5 years after war had first been declared, World War Two was over on the European continent.

During that time, many thousands made the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of victory for the Alliesand the defeat of fascism. This year we mark the 80th Anniversary of this victory and the peace that was won.

Official Royal Canadian Mint issue

Across the world commemorative issues have been released – or are due to be released – marking this historic anniversary. With that in mind it is only right that the Royal Canadian Mint would take the opportunity to mark this key 80th Anniversary with the release of an official Canadian coin, recognising the contribution of many thousands of their countrymen in liberating Western Europe and securing victory. Therefore, a brand-new Canada One Ounce Silver coin has been issued to mark the end of World War Two in Europe. Struck in 999.9/1000 Fine Silver to a magnificent proof condition, the coin comes housed in an official Royal Canadian Mint Presentation Case and with a Certificate of Authenticity.

The coin design is the work of designer Neil Hamelin. The final phase of the Second World War in Europe brought the First Canadian Army to Europe and the Netherlands where the Canadians fought from town to town, bringing freedom and relief to civilians who had endured five years of hardship and occupation. This new silver coin captures that celebratory spirit, and the joy of having freedom restored after five years of occupation as war in Europe came to an end in 1945.

Tiny mintage – a sell out expected

The importance of this new commemorative coin is heightened further still by the size of the mintage. Just a total of 7,000 One Ounce Silver coins have been issued to mark the 80th Anniversary of the End of World War Two in Europe by the Royal Canadian Mint. With the significance of this key commemoration, such a small mintage is an extreme surprise and seems certain to lead to a swift sell out.

Key anniversary for 2025

We should never forget the courage and sacrifice made by so many around the world to bring victory in World War Two and the peace that came with it. It brought a conclusion to six dark years of fighting across the globe – a period which saw Canada stand side-by-side with the United Kingdom throughout the whole conflict even at its darkest moments, with many thousands of the nation’s servicemen making the ultimate sacrifice during the war.

And it is because of the importance of the anniversary that the Royal Canadian Mint has seen significant demand already for its commemorative release in 2025. The good news is the new Canada One Ounce Silver Coin is available from Harrington & Byrne, however we have only a small number available and these will soon be gone - so place your order today.
