In October the Royal Mint unveiled the United Kingdom’s brand new definitive coins. The first time the designs had been updated since 2008 and only the second time since decimalisation over 50 years ago, the new definitive coins have been introduced to coincide with the new reign of King Charles III.

Indeed, the King himself had a huge influence on the design of the new coins – ranging from the £2 down to the penny – focussing specifically on his keen interest in fauna and flora, which will now adorn our coinage.

Sold Out Commemorative Issues

To mark the release of the new coins, the Royal Mint has taken the opportunity to release a small range of collector issues before the coins are to be released into general circulation. And it has come as no surprise that all of the limited-edition releases generated huge collector interest and promptly sold out.

2023 United Kingdom BRAND NEW Definitive Proof Coin Collection

The new United Kingdom Definitive Proof Collection has been released with a mintage of 12,023 sets worldwide. This edition limit on the face of it looked high – and is larger than annual proof sets that are issued each year. However, the reality is that this number ultimately proved to be far too low, with the collection selling completely out within just a few days of launch!

EIGHT new 2023-dated Proof Coins

To confirm, the collection features the United Kingdom’s eight new definitive coin designs. The 50p coin down to a penny – which celebrates some of the key wildlife to inhabit the nation – have been changed for just the second time since decimalisation. And for the first time, both the £1 and the £2 coins have also been updated at the same time to be incorporated within the same series.

The king himself has overseen much of the design process and this has been reflected in the choice of subjects that feature, with designs representing nature and conservation, causes close to His Majesty’s heart. On the obverse of each of the new coins a crowned privy mark also appears – uniquely for this commemorative release in 2023 only.
