Unprecedented Royal Mint release for the Coronation

As we know 2023 is a significant and unprecedented year of royal celebration – and what better way for the Royal Mint to mark the Coronation with the release of an unprecedented royal commemorative coin? That is because, for the first time ever, a Coronation has been celebrated on a 50p coin.

And it’s a truly fantastic release – with a magnificent modern design of the exterior of Westminster Abbey and that also features the Royal Cypher.

Coronation

On 8th September Queen Elizabeth II passed away, leading to the accession of her eldest son Charles to the throne after a 70-year wait. He had long since become the nation’s longest serving heir apparent, even witnessing the Coronation of his mother as a young boy in 1953 at Westminster Abbey.

Now, 70 years later at the very same Abbey, King Charles III was crowned on 6th May. The weekend saw national celebrations across the country, as the United Kingdom marked our first Coronation for 70 years with 3 days of festivities.

New Royal Mint 50p

To mark this historic royal landmark, the Royal Mint has released for the first time ever for a Coronation, a 50p commemorative coin. Like all other Coronation coins from the Royal Mint, all the 50p silver issues sold out on the first day of issue. This success once again underlines the magnitude of the collecting opportunity that is the Coronation – with large numbers of the public wanting to understandably commemorate what for many will be a once-in-a-lifetime occasion.

Small worldwide mintage

Issued with a mintage of just 12,500 worldwide, this edition was always going to be far too low and it is no surprise that they sold out in hours. To put that mintage into a little more context, the 2020 Brexit 50p Silver Coin also sold out – with a mintage of 47,000! The fact that the new Coronation 50p – the first of its kind – was released with an edition limit that was almost 4 times smaller, underlines why the almost instant sell out came as no surprise.

The new coin has been struck in 925/1000 Sterling Silver by the Royal Mint to an immaculate proof finish. The coin is securely encapsulated and housed within its official Presentation Case alongside a Certificate of Authenticity.

New Coronation Designs

The sold out 50p silver coin combines TWO magnificent designs for the Coronation. The reverse is a new design that incorporates the exterior of Westminster Abbey – where King Charles will be crowned like his ancestors over hundreds of years – along with his Royal Cypher.

Even more importantly perhaps, the coin carries a unique crowned portrait of King Charles III on the obverse that has been produced especially for the Coronation coinage. This is designed by esteemed artist Martin Jennings, responsible for the original Charles UK obverse design and will no doubt quickly go down as a numismatic classic for the ages.
