The Lion of England

The Lion of England is one of the ten heraldic Tudor Beasts that are now celebrated by the Royal Mint as the successor to the hugely successful Queen’s Beasts collection.  

The Tudor Beasts to this day line the Moat Bridge entrance to Hampton Court Palace and were commissioned originally by King Henry VIII and his third wife Jane Seymour to symbolise the legitimacy of the king’s rule by portraying his regal ancestry. The Lion of England appears at the Palace holding a shield bearing the combined arms of Henry and his wife, symbolising the strength of the couple’s union. 

And the design on the new coin is truly magnificent – arguably one of the finest to feature on a new British coin for many years. Created by the artist and illustrator David Lawrence the coin features a depiction of the Lion of England that is as fearsome as the original stone beast itself – snarling with sharp claws and with an impressive mane topped with a royal crown.
