Australia’s official tribute for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II

On the 6th February 1952, the Queen ascended to the throne on the death of her father King George VI. She was just 25 years of age at the time and inherited the throne at a far younger age than she would have ever had anticipated.

70 years on and in 2022 the nation and the Commonwealth is celebrating the unprecedented Platinum Jubilee – and this has resulted in the release of a brand-new gold coin that has officially been issued by Australia. It is understandable that the Australian nation would want to commemorate this historic occasion with such a key issue.

Like the United Kingdom, the Queen is the monarch and Head of State of Australia, so it is only right that the country has decided to mark this unique royal celebration with a new gold coin.

Tiny mintage for such an important issue

The importance of this new commemorative coin is heightened further still by the size of the mintage. Just a total of 1,000 sovereign-sized quarter ounce gold coins will be issued by the historic Perth Mint to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The only gold coin of its type to be issued by Australia for this key royal celebration, this edition limit is over 10 times smaller than the UK Proof Sovereign in 2022 – the equivalent issue from the United Kingdom, which sold out on the day of issue.

In addition, the mintage of 1,000 pieces has already been fully allocated by the Perth Mint – with the coins snapped up across the world. The good news is that Harrington and Byrne, whilst we were unable to secure the full number of coins that we requested, has been able to secure the exclusive allocation of this key coin for collectors within the United Kingdom. This limited stock however will not last long. Everything therefore points to a quick sell out for this unprecedented royal gold coin – a sell out that would match that of key Jubilee coins that have already been released throughout the Commonwealth in 2022.

Struck in 24 Carat Gold – Purer than the Sovereign

The demand for the coin comes as little surprise. Putting to one side the extremely significant royal event that is commemorated by the coin, demand for quarter ounce gold coins from Australia is always high. One reason is the low mintages these coins usually carry, but also is the purity. Unlike other popular gold coins issued around the world such as the Sovereign or the US Eagle, those released from the Perth Mint – including the new Platinum Wedding coin – tend to be struck in 24 Carat gold rather than 22 Carat. This means that the coins are produced in a purer metal by the mint, which for many collectors is extremely attractive.

What is just as attractive to collectors is the combination of two new magnificent designs on the coin. The coin depicts on the reverse, the Shield of the Royal Coat of Arms and a figurative flower stem combining an English rose, Irish shamrock and Scottish thistle, together with Australian wattle. A special obverse has a fan of wattle overlaid with Her Majesty’s first and current coin effigies. Introduced on Australian circulating coinage in 1953, Mary Gillick’s popular likeness of the young Queen appears above Jody Clark’s portrait.
