Victory in Europe, or VE Day, on 8th May 1945 marks the day the fighting in Europe finally came to an end following Germany’s unconditional surrender. The official end of World War II, a key turning point of the 20th century, prompted street parties, parades and services of thanksgiving all over the UK and around the world. After almost six years, peace at last was restored.

Depicted on the new Sovereign is the iconic skyline of London, which became a focal point for the country’s celebrations almost eight decades ago. At the centre is St Paul’s Cathedral which thousands visited to attend one of many services giving thanks for peace and was later lit up by beams of light. This specially commissioned design is further complemented by the years 1945 and 2025 as well as a row of three flags, each displaying the letters ‘V’ and ‘E’ plus a Union Jack, reminiscent of the bunting and flag waving which marked the end of the conflict.

On the obverse meanwhile, is an official portrait of Charles III by Jody Clark. The engraver is best-known for designing the UK’s fifth and final official definitive coinage portrait of our late Queen who was 19 years-old on VE Day and with her sister, broke protocol to leave their Royal residence and join in with thousands of people singing and dancing in the capital.
