Marking the 50th Anniversary of mankind’s greatest achievement
On 20th July 1969 the Apollo 11 space flight successfully touched down on the Sea of Tranquillity and landed on the Moon. The Mission Commander, Neil Armstrong, walked into the history books and became the very first human to step foot on the Moon.
The moment was immortalised by his legendary words:
‘one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind’
Words that would be broadcast live worldwide to an estimated half billion TV audience – the largest ever at the time.
50th anniversary commemorations
Understandably, the 50th anniversary commemorations in 2019 has already generated significant interest. Arguably no other anniversary this year will generate so much collector attention due to the unique nature of the occasion in 1969.
Harrington and Byrne is extremely pleased to be able to offer the opportunity to secure today the official release from the US Mint. A coin that is sure to prove exceptionally popular both in this key anniversary year, but also, for many years to come.
United States Mint release
To mark the 50th anniversary in 2019 of the Moon-Landing, the US Mint has issued a range of coins, all features the same magnificent design. Arguably the great peacetime achievement of the 20th century, it is only right that the US Mint would honour this key landmark commemoration.
A new gold coin is the standout issue. Struck in 900/1000 Gold, the coin has been limited to a maximum of 50,000 pieces. A sell out is expected.
The new gold proof issue is struck in a unique curved shaped similar to the iconic and award-winning Baseball issue from 2014. The design depicts a representation of a close-up of the famous ‘Buzz Aldrin on the Moon’ photograph taken July 20, 1969. It shows part of Aldrin’s helmet with its reflection of astronaut Neil Armstrong, the United States flag, and the lunar lander on the surface of the moon. The obverse features a simple booted footprint on the lunar surface. Finally, the $5 Coin comes housed within original United States Mint case and with Certificate of Authenticity.
Just 50,000 of the gold coins will be issued by the United States Mint for what is the key release to commemorate what is one of the most significant post war events of the 20th Century.
Out of that mintage over 50% were sold in the first week alone. When you consider that the anniversary itself is not until July and that initially sales were restricted, you can appreciate why a sell out is almost certain. This commemoration is of worldwide significance, which means the mintage has been set not only to satisfy demand in the United States, but also throughout the world.
