One Year Only Modern Interpretation of St George & the Dragon
Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St George & the Dragon design first featured on the UK Sovereign in 1817 and since 1887 has been a mainstay on the coin.
However, in 2005 The Royal Mint took the controversial decision to replace Pistrucci’s iconic design and to introduce in its place a modern interpretation of St George & the Dragon. It was the first time for over 100 years that the Sovereign design had been changed without a commemoration. The decision was not popular and the following year the traditional design returned.
Despite this unpopularity, for collectors this coin was and remains an essential piece. Like previous changes in 2002 and 1989 the 2005 Proof Sovereign sold out extremely fast and meant that today pieces have become extremely scarce to source.
The good news is that we have a small number of the 12,500 coins that were struck to offer customers. But only a limited number are available so please place your order today.
