Introducing a new United Kingdom collecting phenomenon

After a year of fantastically popular issues, the Royal Mint has left perhaps the most impressive to last – the brand new David Bowie Silver Proof Coin.

The third in the musical legend series, David Bowie is an obvious addition. Born in 1947, his career would span 50 years and would see him receive both critical and popular acclaim throughout before his untimely death in 2016.

Songs such as Space Oddity; Life on Mars; Heroes and Ashes to Ashes enthralled a generation of fans – whilst his career would be defined perhaps by his continued updating of his persona and genre, which would see his Ziggy Stardust persona come and go - and commercial success reignited in the 1980s with his willingness to embrace pop music.

New silver UK coin

In 2020 the Royal Mint has rightly issued a range of coins to celebrate his career and achievements as part of the new musical legend series – a career that would see him named the ‘Greatest Rock Star Ever’ by Rolling Stone following his death in 2016.

The new 2020 United Kingdom David Bowie Silver Proof Half Ounce Coin has been struck in 999/1000 Fine Silver by the Royal Mint and features a brand new design by acclaimed artist Jody Clark, who also created the most recent coinage portrait of Her Majesty The Queen, who looked to the period when Bowie lived and recorded in Berlin in the late 1970s for inspiration. Set against the lightning bolt motif from the Aladdin Sane era, the portrait shows Bowie shedding his various personae to reinvent himself, as he would continue to do for decades to come.

It is presented magnificently in an official Royal Mint acrylic presentation case for safekeeping, with a printed acrylic block and a Certificate of Authenticity.

Limited edition

Just 12,500 of these unprecedented UK David Bowie Silver Proof Coins have been issued by the Royal Mint in this presentation. The coin has a denomination of £1 and with a diameter of 27mm is significantly larger than the usual £1 size.

The silver proof half ounce coin is one of a number of pieces issued by the Royal Mint to celebrate David Bowie, with many sold out within 24 hours of release – unsurprisingly given the importance and following that the legacy of David Bowie continues to enjoy to this day – and this coin will soon follow suit.
