A brand-new commemoration for the 75th Anniversary of Victory in Europe
Later this week the nation will mark the 75th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany and the VE Day celebrations.
On 8th May 1945 Victory in Europe was celebrated in Great Britain and across the western world as the defeat of Germany was confirmed and almost 6 years of war on the continent ended. Millions of people across the country joined servicemen, politicians and royalty to celebrate the end of war, with mass crowds in London flocking to Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace – where the King and Winston Churchill would greet the joyous crowds from the balcony.
Across the world commemorative issues have been or are due to be released – marking this historic triumph and hard-won peace.
Perhaps the most impressive release has come from the world-renowned Pobjoy Mint.
The new 50p coin has been struck on behalf of Gibraltar in 925/1000 Sterling Silver to a magnificent proof condition. The coin features the rarely seen addition of colour on the reverse – which shows the flags of the Western Allies that together helped defeat Germany.
The importance of this new commemorative coin is heightened further still by the size of the mintage. Just a total of 4,950 silver 50p coins have been issued to mark the 75th Anniversary of the VE-Day celebrations. With the significance of this key commemoration, this mintage is expected to sell out swiftly.
Indeed, compare that with the first ever UK coin issued to commemorate VE-Day. That was 25 years ago by the Royal Mint to mark the 50th Anniversary of the historic event and would see over 35,000 silver £2 coins released – almost 10 times more than will be issued for this new 2020 anniversary silver coin.
The good news is that when we first heard rumours regarding the issue from Pobjoy for the commemorations, Harrington & Byrne was able to quickly agree an allocation for our collectors. Therefore, you are now in the perfect position, as a valued collector with us, to secure this coin – a key release for this significant anniversary.
Key anniversary for 2020
It is important to remember the huge significance of the VE Day celebrations that marked the end of nearly 6 years of total war. Imagine the outpouring of relief and pride that the British nation expressed after playing a leading role in defeating Nazi Germany and bringing peace to the European continent.
Many thousands of British and allied servicemen paid the ultimate sacrifice to achieve this victory and it was only right that the victory was celebrated in London and across the country. 75 years later it is also right that this historic landmark anniversary is commemorated once more.
