A magnificent tribute to a lifetime of service
On 2nd August 2017 Prince Philip completed his final solo public engagement. At the age of 96, it was his last of 22,219 solo engagements that he had undertaken since he had entered public life 70 years ago.
To mark this landmark occasion the Royal Mint took the decision to release a new United Kingdom commemorative £5 crown as a tribute to Prince Philip’s lifetime of public service.
New Royal Mint Crown
Understandably, due to the last-minute nature of the issue, the silver coin was released with a very small mintage of just 3,000. Additionally, as a result of that fact, it had not appeared in any of the earlier annual collections released at the beginning of the year by the Royal Mint – meaning that the coin is one of the scarcest of all commemorative £5 silver coin release of recent times.
The new coin features a magnificent portrait of the Duke of Edinburgh – the original design features one of the last commissions by highly respected designer Thomas ‘Humphrey’ Paget, who had also been responsible for the definitive effigy of King George VI (and Edward VIII – that would never reach circulation).
Due to the importance of the issue and the small edition stated above, I made sure that I secured as big an allocation of the coin as I could before it was released. This decision was underlined by the fact that the coin was confirmed sold out even before the official issue date at the end of August.
However, just 150 coins were secured – just 5% the entire mintage – significantly less than required to cover demand from Harrington & Byrne collectors.
Traditional Royal Mint craftsmanship
The Prince Philip commemorative £5 coin – celebrating a unique royal lifetime of service and devotion to the nation – has been struck in 925/1000 Sterling Silver by the Royal Mint to an immaculate proof finish by the master craftsmen of the Royal Mint.
Each coin is securely encapsulated and housed within its official Royal Mint Presentation Case alongside the original Certificate of Authenticity.
