Introducing the record-breaking Platinum Jubilee UK Sovereign – Sold Out at the Royal Mint

The release each year of the United Kingdom Gold Proof Sovereign is always widely anticipated throughout the collector world. For the past 7 years the coin sells out leaving many disappointed – but the new 2022 has surpassed all previous sell-out achievements.

One Year Design Change

This is because 2022 is different. Different because the premier gold collector coin of the nation celebrates this year the Platinum Jubilee of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. This is marked by a change in the design on the sovereign, which sees Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George & The Dragon replaced on the coin for the first time in a decade since the Diamond Jubilee.

The new one-year design on the UK Sovereign is the work of Timothy Noad – responsible also for the 2002 Golden Jubilee Sovereign design – and is a reinterpretation of the Royal Coat of Arms.

Record Sell Out

The combination of royal celebration and design change on the coin has seen the 2022 United Kingdom Platinum Jubilee Gold Proof Sovereign sell out in less than 10 hours.

That’s correct – before the end of the working day on the day of release, 10,500 gold proof sovereigns had been completely sold out by the Royal Mint – that’s over 1,000 coins sold per hour!

This is unprecedented demand for any gold coin in living memory – fuelled by the long-term Proof Sovereign demand in the market that has been heightened hugely with the change in design.

The long-term importance of unique sovereigns

Design changes on the Sovereign do not often happen – this is only the sixth time in the whole reign that a genuine change has been seen. On these rare occasions when the sovereign sees a one-year design change like in 2022, demand from collectors always goes through the roof. This leads to rapid sell outs and consequently high secondary market price increases – this is already happening with the 2022 United Kingdom Gold Proof Sovereign.

But it is not just the short term. Take the 2012 United Kingdom Diamond Jubilee Proof Sovereign as an example from a decade ago from Her Majesty’s last national celebration of the reign. The one year only Sovereign for that year now retails at the Royal Mint for close to £2,000 – a rise of over four times its original issue price.

This is just one example. In truth, all one-year-only Proof Sovereigns released during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, have performed in a similar fashion – once again underlining the huge long term demand for the most important Proof Sovereign releases.

Struck in 22 Carat Gold

Like all United Kingdom Sovereigns, the new 2022 release has been struck in 22 Carat Gold by the Royal Mint. The coin features a unique one-year commemorative design for the Platinum Jubilee, comes housed in the finest Royal Mint Official Presentation Case and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

The coin has also been struck to the same historical specifications as every United Kingdom Sovereign for the last 200 years.

Secure your new Proof Sovereign today

Harrington & Byrne was able to secure a small allocation of the coin before the rapid sell-out. This means we remain in a position to offer this key coin to our collectors despite the Proof Sovereign being long since sold out at the Royal Mint.
