Introducing another United Kingdom sell out coin
It is with much excitement that a new United Kingdom gold coin has just been launched by the Royal Mint. Featuring the Griffin of Edward III, the new quarter ounce coin has been struck in 24 Carat Gold – purer than the Sovereign – and is the FINAL coin in the hugely successful Queen’s Beasts series. The coin has already SOLD OUT at the Mint, within a matter of just days of its launch.
The Griffin of Edward III
The Griffin of Edward III is one of the ten heraldic Queen’s Beasts. The Queen’s Beasts featured prominently at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, a striking line-up of statues that acted as a reminder of the centuries of tradition that went before her. And the design is truly magnificent – arguably one of the finest to feature on a new British coin for many years.
Created by the same designer who produced the latest portrait of Her Majesty, which also appears on this new issue, the design features the heraldic Griffin of Edward III. The griffin appears in English heraldry from the twelfth century onwards, and first entered royal service as a beast of Edward III (1327–77). Most significant was Edward III’s use of a signet seal called ‘the griffin’. A seal was the most powerful and authoritative expression of royal identity.
This seal, bearing the image of a griffin, was used by the king for twenty years until 1354. A symbol of power and leadership, the griffin continued to be used as a royal badge after Edward III’s death in 1377.
24 Carat Gold – rapid sell out
The Griffin of Edward III coin is struck in a quarter ounce of fine 24 Carat Gold – purer than the UK Sovereign, which is minted in just 22 Carat Gold – and to a peerless proof finish by the mastercraftsmen of the Royal Mint. The coin is also housed within an official Royal Mint Presentation Case and comes with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
This certificate attests to the overall mintage that has been set at just 1,250 coins worldwide. A tiny mintage for a United Kingdom Quarter Ounce Gold coin and this has been underlined by the fact that the coin sold out at the Royal Mint within a matter of days.
This demand was a result of the purity and small mintage – but was also due to the fact that all nine previous Queen’s Beast issues in the series that began in 2017 with the Lion of England, have all sold out. The Griffin is the final coin in this hugely successful series of United Kingdom coins and has a mintage which is 50% smaller than that very first release. An immediate sell out was inevitable.
