2020 Remembrance Day Gold Proof Quarter Sovereign

  Description    Specifications     Free Delivery

A magnificent new Gold Quarter Sovereign issued to mark Remembrance Day in 2020 and the centenary of the interment of the Unknown Warrior

This year the nation marks the centenary of the interment of the Unknown Warrior at Westminster Abbey – when the remains of an unknown soldier from the battlefields of World War One was given a state burial at Westminster Abbey – resting alongside Kings and Queens of Great Britain.

The ceremony took place on the 11th November 2020 – two years to day of the Armistice – and the day of national Remembrance to those that made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation during battle.

To commemorate this historic landmark a new Gold Quarter Sovereign has been released.

The Unknown Warrior

The idea of a Tomb of the Unknown Warrior was first conceived in 1916 by the Reverend David Railto , who, while serving on the Western Front, had seen a grave marked by a rough cross, which bore the pencil-written legend 'An Unknown British Soldier'.

He wrote to the Dean of Westmonster in 1920 proposing that an unidentified British soldier from the battlefields in France be buried with due ceremony in Westminster Abbey "amongst the kings" to represent the many hundreds of thousands of Empire dead.  The idea was strongly supported by the Dean and the Prime Minister.

In November 1920 the remains of an unknown soldier was selected from the various battlefields and solemnly transferred to Britain for the State Burial at Westminster Abbey on the 11 November – the mourners led by King George V and the Prime Minster, alongside about one hundred women that were invited because they had each lost their husband and all their sons in the war.

The coffin was interred in the far western end of the Nave at the Abbey, only a few feet from the entrance, in soil brought from each of the main battlefields.  The grave was then capped with a black Belgian marble stone and is the only tombstone in the Abbey on which it is forbidden to walk.

Limit Edition release

In honour of the centenary of the interment of the Unknown Warrior and Remembrance in 2020 a brand-new Gold Sovereign issue has been approved for release by Buckingham Palace. Struck in 22 Carat Gold to a collector favourite proof finish, the new quarter sovereign release features a poignant poppy design – synonymous with the annual remembrance tradition – alongside a silhouette of a lone soldier.

As well as the significance to the nation of Remembrance Day each year, which will only be heightened further in this key centenary year of the Unknown Warrior, the size of the mintage of the new Commonwealth Sovereign means that a sell-out is highly likely.  The 2020 Unknown Warrior Centenary Remembrance Day Gold Quarter Sovereign has an edition limit of just 4,999 coins worldwide – a tiny mintage for a gold coin of this importance.

As a result, it is more important than ever to respond quickly to secure your new gold coin.  With demand already proving high for the new release the mintage of 4,999 coins is not expected to last long for this important commemorative release.  With that in mind please make your reservation today.
